Construction of the first three berths of the Lamu port at a cost of Sh5 billion is 40 per cent complete. Lapsset Corridor Development Authority Director General Silvester Kasuku said the three ship docking sites are expected to be complete by July next year.

Chinese contractor working on the multi-million-shilling Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport corridor project, Kasuku said is currently dredging the seabed up to 18 metres deep.

He said part of the on-going works entails reclamation of land which will form the container terminal, three berths, piling, decking and the construction of 1.5 kilometres causeway.

“Dredging works is going on, it will be 18 metres deep during low tide and 21 metres deep during high tide,’’ he told journalists at the site of the berths in Lamu. Already, 700 metres have been dredged and another half kilometre remaining will be completed next year, he added.

Kasuku said the government has already signed an agreement with a South African company to construct the 532 kilometre road that will link Lamu to Isiolo and South Sudan.

“Lamu port will accommodate cargo ships which are 400 metres long and shall open up the area for trade,’’ he said. Transport Principal Secretary Paul Maringa said the vision for Lamu is beginning to take shape with current works going on. He said their aim is to set up a resort city in the county which will accommodate one million people.
