At least Sh2.98 trillion ($29 billion) foodstuff is imported annually to Common Market for Eastern and Southern (Comesa) states despite having resources to produce their own food, a regional meeting in Nairobi was told yesterday.

Participants at the Comesa Business Council forum, heard that the region is unable to produce enough food due to high cost of transport, lack of market and trade information, high taxes, porous border and graft.

Speaking at the consultative forum, Chris Kiptoo, Trade Principal Secretary said the corridor holds the key to the success of trade in the region.

“Member States need to refocus energies and strategies on building linkages among themselves to promote growth in manufacturing sector and enhance intra-regional trade,” he said.

Kiptoo said despite the region being endowed with natural resources, agriculture sector still underperforms, and remains a net importer of food.

Kenya Association of Manufacturers chairperson, Flora Mutahi said there has been low local sourcing from the region by large corporates. She said the council creates a platform for strengthening business linkages in the region’s agro-industry .
